sudoku madness!!!

February 15th, 2007

title1.jpg

As many of you know, I love the Sudoku.  In fact I may be a little obsessed, but I cant help it!  The wonderful number logic game is always fun and challenging.  Sudoku is great for airplanes, bus rides, and in my case, during class.  And completing a puzzle always guarantees a feeling of satisfaction.

Even when I am super busy, I always find time to complete the Sudoku.  In fact, since moving to DC I have discovered the Samurai Sudoku which consists of not just one Sudoku puzzle, but FIVE overlapping Sudoku puzzles. This is like a Sudoku players dream!

Now there is even a crazy world of electronic Sudoku puzzles and competitions with other Sudoku players, read more here. Thank you Keli for the article!

And yes……… I have many Sudoku puzzle books, an electronic Sudoku game, Sudoku games downloaded on all my phones, Sudoku games on my Mac Powerbook Dashboard, and still scavenge newspapers so I can complete their Sudoku as well!

Winter wonderland in Washington DC

January 23rd, 2007
IMGP2986

It snowed in DC!!! My first snow experience in Washington DC happened Sunday morning. It was so beautiful and relaxing, but it was freezing!!! I took lots of pictures, and people in my building even made a snowman on our patio. I have never “lived” in a city that snowed more than once ever 10 years, so this was a treat!

(I added an album with some pictures. Most of the pics are from inside my room looking out the window, or in the grassy area in front of my building.)

Zoo!

January 20th, 2007
panda.jpg

Today I went to the Zoo with friends from my program! We saw the Pandas, Elephants, Hippos, FROGS and even Turtles mating!! It was sunny when we got there, but we were freezing by the time we left. The Zoo is pretty big and a lot of the animals were inside because of the weather, but they offer indoor exhibits so we can still see them! It was a pretty good trip and we got super close to the Pandas, we saw a mommy and a baby. Ill post more pictures soon! Read about the Zoo here.

restaurant week……yummy

January 19th, 2007

Last week was Restaurant Week here in DC. This is a very cool week to eat out because the fancy, and expensive restarants, have set prices and 3 or 4 course set menus. Lunch is $20.07 (themed with the year 2007) and dinner is $30.07.

imgp2884.JPG

I went on a date with my roommate Keli and our friend Cliff. We went to Nage, a nice restuarant NEXT door to our buidling. We had a four course meal, and we all ordered different stuff so we could share and taste everything!

imgp2886.JPG

My appetizer was a Curried Cauliflower Golden Raisin Bisque, w/ Gingerbread Croutons

imgp2889.JPG

My Entree was a Braised Short Rib Gremolata, w/ Marscapone and Sun-dried Cherry Polenta

imgp2890.JPG

Keli had the Cassoulet of Duck Confit and Pork Belly, w/ Braised Cabbage

For Deseert we all had the “Sweet Thoughts of the Day” ~

imgp2891.JPG
Fried Bananas and Cream, stuffed in this thingy
(Wild Mushroom and Goat Chees Strudel was Cliff’s appetizer. Keli had the Warm Brie and Arugala Salad for her appetizer. Cliff had the Crispy Dorade Royale for his Entree, a very good fish dish.)

Sightseeing, visiting, and working….oh my!

January 18th, 2007

I have almost finished 2 weeks of work, wow! On top of work, and class, I am also starting to think about my research paper (which has to be 25 pages!). But I will not let that stop me from seeing this city! Here is what I have been up to……

imgp2899.JPG

This past Monday was MLK Day and we had no work or school. Keli (my roomie) and I decided to do something productive and head to the National Mall. We picked up sandwiches on the way and headed to the WWII Memorial. The WWII Memorial is one of the newer memorials and it has great photo ops because it right in the middle of the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. It has a really cool pool and a bunch of fountains all around. It’s pretty relaxing and very popular in the summer.

imgp2918.JPG

We also walked along the reflecting pool….

imgp2928.JPG

And made it to see Mr. Lincoln

imgp2950.JPG

(he is huge!!!)

imgp2930.JPG

The Lincoln memorial is amazing! It’s so big and offers a great look out point. It was especially cool to be there on MLK day since that is where he gave his “I have a Dream” speech. There is a memorial engraved where he gave this speech and it was very powerful to be there! There is also a great view of the Washington Monument, which Mr. Lincoln looks out to.

My Job is going very well. I am working on a few different programs and enjoying the free perks offered at my work (I saw ‘Wild Safari’ at the IMAX in the Natural history Museum this past week, for FREE). I feel lucky to work on such large projects with the Smithsonian. The main project I am working on is a “Teaching American History Through Geography” program. We have 3 full days (in Lafayette, LA) of programs where teachers will learn about Ben Franklin, Lewis & Clark and Sacagawea, from historians and presenters who are experts on these subjects. These teachers are later going to come to DC and attend museums and a few more programs on the same subject. This program is amazing!!! I got to go to a meeting that was in the American Art Museum and the Portrait Gallery. I am also working on a few more such as Scholars in Schools (bring Smithsonian Scholars to your school for the ultimate learning experience) and a Speaker Series in Florida. After only 2 weeks, I have jumped right into these projects and I am loving it!

AND I met my Uncle Jon (from Alaska) last night for dinner! It was really great to see him and we went to McCormick’s for some great seafood! Accidentally, we ordered 3 orders of oysters, so we each had our own appetizer. Lets just say I was not disappointed! The food was great and so was the company.

Life in Washington DC is nowhere near boring! I am having a great time, but it’s getting colder…… maybe snow soon.

District of Columbia

January 8th, 2007

I have almost “lived” in Washington DC for a week. Pretty exciting, huh? Among my classes and orientations I have been attending, I have also worked in a little sightseeing. I have ventured to Georgetown University and the shopping area of Georgetown, the National Mall, and the Natural History Museum.

IMGP2678

While visiting Georgetown University we saw many historic buildings and explored the Leavy Center, which houses the campus bookstore, food court, and a dozen other student resources. The University is located near the Potomac River on a small hill, so there is a nice view. I bought a Hoyas sweatshirt and some other trinkets to wrap up our campus tour.

We also did some shopping in the Georgetown area, where many stores, restaurants and coffee shops are located. Its a very nice and busy area to visit, especially if you need to do some shopping.

IMGP2727

It took me 4 days to make it over to the National Mall, where most of the monuments and museums are located, but we finally made it! We walked straight to the Washington Monument, located in the middle of the mall, where you can see great views of both the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial.

IMGP2735

I was also able to visit my first museum!!! I went to the Natural History Museum with some other UCers. I saw some dinosaurs, mammals, fossils and a cool nature photography exhibit.

Today I was able to find my internship and visit Whole Foods market for some grocery shopping. Strange DC phenomena: Hard Alcohol cannot be purchased on the weekend, and beer and wine can only be purchased before 5pn on Saturday.

Tomorrow is my first day at work!!! Wish me luck!

Welcome to 2007 and Hello D.C.!!!

January 4th, 2007

Happy New Year everyone! I can’t believe it is already the year 2007. Lucky number 7?!?! I had a great New Years Eve in Sacramento, watching the Fireworks off the Tower Bridge, a fireworks show worth watching!

A day later I flew to Washington DC for a quarter long internship/class program. I made it here safely and this city is amazing. I have walked around, tried some food and explored my building. There will be many more stories and pictures to come!

Check out my new picture Gallery! There is only one picture right now (me, on the big screen at my graduation!!!) but there will be many more pictures soon!

Hello world!

December 14th, 2006
This is my awesome new website. There’ll be more to come soon.

Classic Savion

October 2nd, 2006

On the evening of my Birthday, I went to the Mondavi with my parents and Shawn. We saw Savion Glover, a Rythm Tap legend. His show was titled “Classic Savion.” He Tap danced to many Bach and other classical music peices perfromed by his 9 peice instrumental group. The show was amazing and it was great to see Tap in a different form and to learn some new steps for my Tap Classes. I met Savion at a one of his Master Classes about 10 years ago, he is as graceful and talented as he looks!
